Here in Palermo, capital city of Sicily, I was surprised by the atmosphere of the city. On touring the city I found it charming. Yes, like all cities it has areas that could be so much better for living conditions and cleanliness, but the overall impression was very positive.
Built on the coastline , it is of course an important seaport city and has served as such for the tradefarers of old.
The city is surrounded by fertile plains enclosed by nearby hills. The countryside was so green , one could have been forgiven for confusing it with Ireland- ...Another surprise, as my memories of the east coast were of a very hard rocky and sometimes barren landscape.
