Artistic Merit
December 2, 2015
An extensive exhibition of the art of Jesus Otero is housed in a Museum in Santillana del Mar, on the west coast of Spain. He was born in the village in 1908 and became a well known sculptor. A few months before his death he donated his remaining works to the town, hence the Museum, in his name.
He was considered a " favourite son " of the region of Cantabria and his sculptures, as can be seen in the images, reflect a simplicity that may have been bought about by the wonderful prehistoric art of the nearby Altamira caves.

Certainly a bison placed in the Plaza Mejor of the village, has been inspired by this art.
